Noise reduction and energy harvesting from walking via metamaterials

Xingyun Li holds a Bachelor's degree from Anhui University of Science and Technology and a Master’s degree from Beijing Academy of Science. His research background is rooted in acoustics, vibro-acoustics, and noise and vibration control, with a particular focus on acoustic and elastic metamaterials for low-frequency wave manipulation. Before starting his PhD, he worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research experience includes theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies on membrane-type acoustic metamaterials, active electroacoustic absorbers, and composite mufflers.

Xingyun is currently pursuing a PhD at CNRS-IEMN/University of Lille within the MetacMed Project. His doctoral research focuses on noise reduction and vibration energy harvesting from walking-induced excitations using mechanical and elastic metamaterials. His interests include locally resonant structures, low-frequency structure-borne vibration control, hierarchical, topological, and architected metamaterials, and electromechanical coupling for energy harvesting, with applications in intelligent flooring systems.

Project objectives

  • To perform extensive numerical simulations aimed at finding promising configurations for MMs capable of exhibiting wave control properties at multiple audible frequencies
  • To evaluate the performance of the MMs via frequency response analyses and time-transient FEM computations
  • To realise specimens via AM at different scale levels
  • To optimize the structural design on the base of the predicted dynamic behavior. Methods will include optimization algorithms, including genetic algorithms
